It's Sexual Assault Awareness Month! This year's theme is 'Building Connected Communities'. Any space where people come together is a community, whether in neighborhoods, workplaces, campuses, organizations, or even online spaces. We are all a part of a community - we want to work toward ensuring our communities are safe, inclusive, and equitable.

Every April across the U.S., individuals and organizations with a passion for sexual violence prevention take part in Sexual Assault Awareness Month, or SAAM. The goal of SAAM is to raise awareness about sexual violence and educate communities on how to prevent it. While one month isn’t enough to solve the serious issue of sexual violence, SAAM is an opportunity to open up conversation about consent and prevention efforts throughout the year.

Wear your denim for the day!

A BRIEF DENIM DAY HISTORY

Jeans are a huge part of American fashion. When you find the perfect fit, you feel like you can conquer anything that comes your way. I am sure an 18-year-old Italian woman felt the same way when she put on a pair and got into a car with her 45-year-old driving instructor. During the drive, her instructor raped her. She pressed charges and he was convicted, but in that same decade, his sentence was overturned by the Italian Supreme Court. The Court’s opinion was the woman’s jeans were so tight that only she could have removed them herself, therefore she must have consented. This decision created an uproar around the world and sparked a movement to wear denim to show solidarity and support for sexual assault survivors. For over 20 years the last Wednesday in April has been dedicated to educating and bringing awareness to victim blaming culture. There is no excuse that justifies sexual assault.
